Signs you're off Balance & What to do about it - in 10-15 minutes or less

It’s relatively easy to tell when you’re getting off balance – although you may not wish to admit it.  Why? Well, then you might actually have to do something about it and who has the time for one more thing?  For ideas on what to do about  it in under 10-15 minutes, read on.

Signs that you may be off balance:

  • You have so much on your to do list, you have absolutely no idea where to begin.
  • You’re not getting enough sleep or are making poor food choices.  This is understandable when there’s no time to stock up on or prepare healthier options.
  • You’re irritated, frustrated or overwhelmed (or perhaps a mix of each).
  • Family members are short with you or vice-versa.
  • Guilt starts to creep in about whether you’re doing enough. You wonder what in your life you need to drop.  You may even start to become obsessed with whether or not something is really worth your time, causing more anxiety and angst that adds to your stress.

It’s A LOT;  I know – as these are challenges both my clients and I have on a regular basis.

Full Disclosure: As a Work-Life Balance Coach, I definitely don’t have it all figured out.  The silver lining is that I never run out of content!  I invite you to learn along with me! 😉

Here’s one small action step you can take to start getting a handle on it:

Pick ONE area of your life you feel that’s weighing you down the most.

Using myself as an example, it’s spending quality time with my family that’s my biggest challenge at the moment.  In the past, I’ve scheduled dates with my kids and husband.  What typically transpires is that we’ll do a date one week, it gets busy, drops off the radar, guilt tends to creep in, and the cycle repeats.  So I say scratch that for now . . . as we can build up to this over time and aim for dates once every other week or once a month to start.

What’s one small action step you can take today toward this area of your life?  Better yet, what’s one micro-action you can do in under 10-15 minutes?

Here are a few ideas to get you going in the right direction:

Issue

Potential 10-15 Minute Solution

Not getting enough sleep

Set an alarm on your phone or a clock alarm (so you don’t get distracted by your phone) to get ready for bed 10-15 minutes earlier.

Establishing Healthier Habits (instead of continuing to push off starting a new diet next week)

Consider asking a friend to be an accountability partner and set-up a 10-15 minute phone call to brainstorm together do-able ideas on healthier eating or exercise habits. (Even better, do a “walk and talk” accountability call during your lunch break.)

Healthier Eating

Set aside 10-15 minutes in the next few days to get rid of the junk food in your pantry.  Then the next time you’re at the grocery store, load up on healthier replacement food and snacks.

Enhancing Relationships

Once at home or if working from home, shut your office doors and lock or put an obstacle in front of it. Commit to 10-15 minutes of being fully present with your family, whoever is most important to you – just one evening this week.

The key here is to start small and ONLY choose one at a time to work on.  There’s a temptation to try and do it all . . . a syndrome I certainly have.  Eventually, we can get there . . . just one step at a time.  The idea is to build upon micro-wins, little by little.

Remember to celebrate these wins.

A new tool I’ve recently adopted that has helped me stay more consistent is using a habit tracker.  You can find them on various apps or as I chose to print out a paper version, which travels with me from my desk and near my journal in the evening to see how I did.

The one I’m planning to implement before the end of the week is the last one, enhancing relationships.

I’d love to know how this goes for you, so please comment below after you give it a try or send me a note.

If you need further support with this, I’d encourage you to book a Complimentary Back to Balance Discovery Session, where you’ll come away with clarity about your issue and a mini-action plan to implement immediately.
